Compare three to six items from the same category, intended use, and approximate size range. Ask the same evidence question of every row, write down what is missing, and stop when one candidate is clearly better explained—not merely more attractive.
Set one comparison question before opening a link
“Which one is best?” is too vague. A useful question names the item and the uncertainty: “Which lightweight jacket has the clearest measurements and construction photos?” or “Which bag shows enough dimensions and strap detail to judge everyday use?”
The question keeps the comparison fair. If one row is a heavy winter jacket and another is a thin shell, the lower price or lighter weight may reflect a different product rather than better value.
Write the question at the top of the shortlist and reject any row that cannot answer it. This small constraint also makes later notes more useful: every measurement, photo, price, and weight clue now supports the same decision instead of becoming an unrelated fact.
A four-pass routine that keeps the tab count small
- Pass 1 — qualify. Keep only rows with the correct product type, a relevant live destination, and an option you can identify.
- Pass 2 — reject. Close rows with missing decision photos, unusable size information, an unrelated destination, or option names that do not match the images.
- Pass 3 — compare. Put no more than three serious candidates side by side and check the same dimension, angle, material note, and likely packed weight on each one.
- Pass 4 — record. Write one reason to keep and one unresolved question. A candidate without a reason leaves the shortlist.
Use a decision matrix, not a feeling

Worked example: three jacket rows
Candidate A
Shows front, back, zipper, cuff, and lining. Measurements have units. Weight is missing.
Decision: keep for one weight check.
Candidate B
Photos are clear, but the chart does not explain how the garment was measured.
Decision: compare only if sizing can be clarified.
Candidate C
Has the lowest-looking price, one polished image, vague options, and no inside view.
Decision: remove now.
Candidate A is not “verified” or guaranteed. It simply creates less uncertainty than the other rows and gives you one specific next check.
Three biases that make weak rows feel stronger
- Thumbnail bias: the cleanest first image wins attention even when it answers none of the hard questions.
- Price anchoring: the first low number becomes the standard before material, size, included parts, and weight are understood.
- Sunk-tab bias: a row stays alive because you already spent time opening it. Time spent is not evidence.
Use a stopping rule
Stop when one candidate passes the basic checklist, is easier to explain than its peers, and has no unresolved issue that would reverse the decision. If two candidates remain close, record the single difference that matters and revisit later. Do not open ten more rows to avoid choosing between two well-understood options.
The goal is not to find a perfect row. It is to know why one row remains and why the others left.
